The famous, or is it, Infamous, Wreck
This is about 2 guys from the radar site that had too much to drink, went and signed out a 4 door pickup truck about midnight. How, where, and why-no one will ever figure that one out.
They were found about 5 AM. One guy was sitting on a rock bleeding from his scalp. The other one had walked to a farmhouse about a mile away. Both were flown to the hospital at Keflavik and returned to the radar site the next day.
Here are the “official accident report” pictures. What the pictures do not show is that the road turned and they did not. They fell about 300 ft from the road to the rocks below. They stayed in the truck. After landing on the rocks, the truck continued to destroy itself. It was another 200 ft before stopping. The truck cab opened up like a can opener had opened it. No action was taken against either of them, since no blood was drawn by the radar site medic and no blood was preserved by the Keflavik hospital. They were bruised, scraped, and sore from an accident that no one should have lived through. The accident was officially listed as “not familiar with the road” and forgotten.

As you can see, the remains of the truck are in the center of this pix. The transmission in in the foreground. In the upper right at the road is one half of the front wheel and transfer case. It was quite a climb just to get to take the pictures.
The pictures and comments are from John Simander.
As I recall, they found a wheel or maybe it was a battery, about a mile away from the main wreckage. JP
