Welcome to my Room.  Sgt. Joe Pyrdek's room was always open for friends and visitors.

Here I am. Improving your mind while stationed at H-3 was one way to fight the boredom of those loooooong Arctic nights!  I'll leave you to figure out the other ways to fight the boredom.

In the 33 years since these pictures were taken it seems that most of my hair fell from my head and settled around my waist ;-)  That is the only way I can explain why one got thinner and the other got thicker.

Here are some pictures of others who were stationed at H3.  Click on the picture to see a larger version.

Larry Stevens was a friend and fellow radar maintenance worker. He called Coure D'Arlene, Idaho home. We emptied a few bottles and caught a few fish on the days when we did not have a Tower shift to pull. Barney: He was a real quiet young man and efficient and never complained.

Here we have "Tex" complete with empty holster. If anyone would have attacked us, all we could could do was throw rocks. At least we would never have run out of ammo! Gee, I wish I could remember his actual name. Check the Mail Call page for more info

On the right is yet another of the fine gentlemen I had the pleasure of serving with whose name has escaped from my mind in the past 33 years. A1C Larry Stevens is pictured on the left.

Here a few of the 30352s and the Sarge working on the oil filter press.  This thing was supposed to allow us to filter the impurities out of the oil which was used as an insulator in some of the high voltage components in the radar transmitter.  We never did get that darn thing to work right.  Finally we just gave up on it.  Back in those days nobody worried, or even knew about for that matter, PCBs and the like.  It looks like it might be  Msgt. Barnett praying that it would work.  It didn't!

Barney: This is me and I think Airman Short or Smart.
In fact I was Tech. Sgt. when I arrived there. I was promoted to Master Sgt. on 1March 68. I had my wife take a look at this picture and she didn't recognize me.

Here is another Airman taking a break in the kitchen area of the Hofn Open Mess. A number of tasty snacks were prepared in this kitchen. His name, like that of so many, has long since drifted away like the smoke from his cigarette.
Picture
Here is another of the Airmen whose name has long since dropped from my memory. He is coming out of, what I think is, the cold storage area for the Dinning Hall.
Picture
"The Rock" gave you a lot of room to walk and be by yourself. Pictured here is one of the many whose name has slipped away.

There were times to relax and have a quiet drink with fellow Airmen. Here, courtesy of MSgt. Barnette, we see Lt. Klinger and Marty Martin enjoying a drink at the NCO club.

Thanksgiving Day Dinner

Each of the barracks had a lounge for those times when you just felt like hanging out and maybe playing cards or shooting a game of pool. In these lounges we also had a small BYOB type of bar with small lockers for you to store your "supplies". We also had snacks available in the lounge. Shown here, courtesy of MSgt. Barnette, are Lt. Conovaloff, seen admiring his "supplies", and a few friends.

Why am I here? (Identified as Larry Wright by his wife in a message received November 2021.)
Picture
These two were really good friends but were also hamming it up for the camera. Just another picture of Larry Stevens and "Tex". (Tex has checked in to the web site. His name is Bill Harrison.)

Major Kopecky, Site Commander and a visiting Icelandic dignitary......Barney: He relieved Col. Howard about midways thru our assignment there. They were both first class commanders.
Picture
We had some of the greatest cooks in he Air Force. They also were known for clowning around quite a bit.
