Landscapes of H-3
A study in contrasts

Iceland offers some amazing terrain, from the black basalt lava volcanic mountains to the Glaciers to the roaring surf on the black sand beach of the North Atlantic.  Iceland is indeed a study in contrasts.  I have included pictures from the Hofn area here in these "Landscapes" pages.

There are a number of pictures taken by virtually everyone who served at H-3. I offer for your enjoyment a small collection of pictures showing what the area around Hofn AFS, Iceland had to offer in scenic landscapes.

When you first arrived at H-3, the road going to the site gave you a real feel for what to expect. Miles of black rock carved out of the side of a mountain! The year we were there one truck went "Over the edge".
Picture
The landscape around H-3 was both stark and breathtaking! Marty has really captured the feel for this in some of his pictures. Here is Bat Mountain, a mountain not very far from H-3.

and here is the reverse view from Bat Mountain. On the horizon is H-3 as seen from Bat Mountain.

Marty even named some of the rocks in the sea around H-3. Allow us to present to you, SEAL Island.

One of the hills behind H-3 proved a formidable challenge to the Hill Climbing Trucks of H-3.
Picture
The Vatna Jokull was the largest glacier in Iceland and it was a popular place for those of us stationed at H03 to visit when we had a day off. Here, courtesy of Frank Scariano, is a look at some of those glacier climbers.
Picture
The United States was not the first country to have had fortifications on Iceland. The remains of one earlier visitor's armed Forces were still visible in the H-3 area. Here is an old English battlement which was near H-3.
Picture
The English also had some earlier buildings during WW II near H-3 Here is what was left in 1968

The Squadron's Medic on Site was Sgt. Linkeous. Here he is pictured with Iceland's North Atlantic Ocean coastline behind him.
Picture
The roar of the sea was a constant background to the other sounds at H-3.
