Landscapes (Page 2)

In the Summer, the sun would almost always be directly overhead while in the Winter, it could just barely creep over the horizon for a few hours a day.  You can see the snow on the mountains and the length of the shawdows.  This picture was shot at almost Noon in the winter of 1967.  The long shadow on the right is cast be the lighthouse (more info below).

The H-3 site did not just guide and protect the aircraft plying the North Atlantic Airspace.   There was also a lighthouse on our peninsula to help the many ships traveling through our area.  It was maintained by the Icelandic government.  The large pole in the picture was, depending on who you believed, washed ashore in a vicious storm, left by the Navy from one of their old antennas or mysteriously appeared at daybreak after one of those long Arctic nights.

No matter how it got in front of the lighthouse, it did make for some nice pictures.  You could also get a nice picture of H-3 from the Lighthouse,

Some of the time, Iceland was a gloomy and foreboding place, a land of myths and trolls, a land of mists and fog. The original Norse settlers may have seen a sight like this.
Picture
Near H-3 were some very impressive waterfalls.
Picture
Perhaps you may remember this suspension bridge. It carried the main road on the south side of Iceland over the river which was formed by the melting waters of the VatnaJökull glacier. It was one of the favorite "tourist attractions" of the Airmen stationed at H-3. You could watch the seals swimming under the bridge.

Here is the wide view of H-3 as seen from the lighthouse.

Remember the Vatnajökull? It was the largest glacier in Iceland, covering 8% of the island and the one nearest to H-3. It also has several active volcanoes under the glacier. The most recent eruption was in 2004. Click on the picture for additional information on the Vatnajökull.

Another of the numerous waterfalls near H-3.
